국제교류처 해외한국학지원실에서는 매년 ‘한국학중앙연구원 펠로십'을 통해 한국에서 한국학 관련 연구를
수행하고자 하는 해외 연구자를 초청‧지원하여 해외 한국학 저변 확대를 도모하고 있습니다.

4. 발표 내용
Often ignored or ill-understood, paper talismans (Kor. pu 符) constituted major products of Korean print and material culture, especially in the Chosŏn period when Buddhism was deeply integrated into the everyday life of Chosŏn people. Situated ambiguously between illegibility and legibility, between text and image, and between human script and divine sign, talismanic language encouraged its users not to read but to gaze, initiating two-way visual exchanges between the printed object and its beholder. Taking a close look at an epidemic talisman included in the Scripture Taught by the Buddha on the Divine Spell for Dispelling Plague in Chosŏn Buddhism, this talk demonstrates that gazing is another form of “reading,” which allowed Chosŏn Buddhists an immediate and intuitive engagement with talismans, and that this ritualized reading was an intentional and integral part of the material matrix of Buddhist talismans.
