조선의 왕은 하늘, 땅, 사람으로 구성된 우주의 중심을 관통하는 존재였기에 절대적 권력과 영향력을 가졌고, 궁궐이라는 폐쇄된 공간에서 직계가족, 왕족을 보필하는 내시와 궁녀 등 천여 명과 함께 살았다. 그러므로 왕실 사람들의 삶은 늘 동경과 호기심의 대상이었고, 특히 역사적인 사건과 삶의 굴곡이 많았던 왕일수록 더욱 사람들의 이목이 집중된다. 조선 19대 왕인 숙종은 재위 46년(1674~1720) 동안 큰 전쟁 없이 대외 문제가 비교적 평온하여 성리학을 장려하고 많은 인재를 배출했다. 또한 선조 말부터 시작된 대동법을 전국적으로 실시해 실효를 거두었고, 주전鑄錢 사용 확대로 경제 시책의 결실을 이루었다. 그러나 붕당정치가 절정에 이르던 시기, 애증의 감정을 드러내며 붕당정치를 격화시킴으로써 비참한 살육사건이 수차례 일어났다. 후대의 사가들은 조선에서 당쟁이 가장 심했으나 군주의 고유 권한을 적절히 활용하여 정권을 교체하고 왕권 강화와 민생 안정에 주력할 수 있었다고도 평한다. 숙종은 어린 시절부터 감수성이 섬세하고 예민한 성격이었기 때문에 감정 기복이 심했다. 이러한 섬세하고 감정에 충실한 숙종은 사랑 때문에 왕비인 인현왕후를 폐위하고 궁녀인 장씨를 왕비로 비상하게 했다. 그러나 6년 후 왕후를 복위하면서 수많은 사람이 희생되었고 끝내는 두 여인도 지키지 못했다. 지나친 사랑의 폐단을 인식한 숙종은 다시는 후궁이 후비 자리에 오를 수 없게 하라고 명하기도 했다. 숙종에게는 3명의 왕후와 4명의 후궁 외에 계보에 없는 2명의 후궁이 더 있었다. 궁중문학의 백미인 <인현왕후전>은 숙종 대의 이러한 역사적 사실을 소재로 주인공은 물론 사건에 직간접적으로 연루되었던 수많은 사람들의 이야기를 극적으로 서술하였다. 특히 당시 유행하던 소설 양식을 차용해 인물의 성격을 거의 완벽하게 형상화하여 갈등을 극대화하고 흥미를 더해 작품의 완성도를 높였다. 이 책에는 인현왕후, 장희빈과 삼각관계의 중심축에서 여러 차례 사화를 단행한 인간 숙종의 사랑과 회한이 실록과 <인현왕후전>의 기록을 통해 그려지고 있다.

Based on The Story of Queen Inhyeon and the Veritable Records of the Joseon Dynasty, this book focuses on the love triangle between King Sukjong, Queen Inhyeon, and Huibin Jang, as well as the political turmoil created by their love, which resulted in several bloody purges during King Sukjong’s reign. 

King Sukjong was the 19th king of the Joseon dynasty, and during his forty-six-year reign (1674 ~ 1720), which was considered one of the more peaceful times during the dynasty without any invasions, he promoted the study of neo-Confucianism and discovered many talented scholars. The Uniform Land Tax Law, which had begun during the late years of King Seonjo’s reign, was finally producing results, and with the expansion of the use of coinage, King Sukjong was able to introduce financial reforms. However, factional strife became most intense during his reign and led to bloody purges. Historians often describe King Sukjong as a monarch who used his power effectively to strengthen the power of the monarch and who strove to promote stability and order for the people. 
Ever since King Sukjong was young, he was sensitive and emotional, and prone to emotional swings. Even after being enthroned, he was true to his feelings by falling in love with a lady-in-waiting, and crowning her as queen by deposing Queen Inhyeon. The lady-in-waiting was Huibin Jang, who became the Queen Consort. Six years later, however, King Sukjong reinstated Queen Inhyeon, and this change of heart in the king resulted in the death of many ministers and officials in the court of Joseon. Not only that, he lost both women: Queen Inhyeon died shortly after her reinstatement, and Huibin Jang was sentenced to death by drinking poison in the same year. Realizing the fatal outcome of his decisions, King Sukjong later issued an edict to prohibit a royal concubine from becoming queen consort. According to the records, King Sukjong had three queen consorts, four official royal concubines, and two more unofficial concubines. 
One of the most well-known court literary works is 《The Story of Queen Inhyeon》, which weaves together different stories of many historical figures who were directly or indirectly involved with the deposition and reinstatement of Queen Inhyeon. Using the narrative format popular at the time of King Sukjong, the story portrays each character as faithfully as it can, and thereby enables readers to understand the conflicts among the characters.
