제목: Reading Giorgio Vasari in Korean: Translation and its Discontents

개요: Is there such a thing as an “art historical self”? And if so, where might we locate that self amid its scholarship and the labor of translation? As a preliminary response to these questions this talk offers an account of Giorgio Vasari’s Lives (1550/1568), arguably art history’s foundational text, and its first complete translation in an East Asian language. Published in Seoul in 1986, Pachaliŭi itallia lŭnesangsŭ misulkachŏn (Vasari’s Lives of Italian Renaissance Artists) took the translator Lee Keun Bai some 20 years to complete. He carried out this nightly work under two conditions: first, the restored legality of the Korean language after Japanese colonial domination, and second, the impossibility of returning to his home region and forced separation from his family after the Korean War. His vocation prompts consideration of the reception of canonical “Western” art history in “non-Western” areas, on the one hand; more broadly, Lee’s self-decentered work inspires thoughts on the role of language in life-writing and the meaning of existence in the face of war and uncertain death.

제목: 대한민국 민주공화제의 ‘미국발’ 계보: 대한인국민회와<대동단결선언>

개요: 이 발표는 사회학적 상상력과 역사적 기록을 결합하여 대한민국과 상해 임시정부(1919)가 선포한 민주 공화주의의 기원을 추적한다. 대한민국은 1948년 상해 임시정부의 법적 전통을 계승한다고 선언했지만, 상해 임시정부가 어떻게 그리고 왜 갑자기 민주 공화제를 선언했는지는 불분명하다. 일반적으로 한국 역사학자들은 1917년에 발표된 "대동단결선언"이 1919년 상해 임시정부가 선언한 민주 공화제 도입의 촉매제 역할을 했다는 데 동의하고 있다. 또한 역사가들은 중국 내 한국 독립 운동가들이 "대동단결선언"을 초안했다는 데에도 대체적으로 동의하면서 민주 공화제는 “대세”였다고 설명하고 있다. 그러나 본 발표에서는 1909년 미국에서 안창호가 대한인국민회를 설립하고 1911년 “무형정부”를 수립하며 민주 공화제 도입을 실험 및 제도화했다는 점에 주목한다. 1911년 12월 대한인국민회 북미총회(KNA) 에서 21개 의안이 통과되었다. 1911년 KNA 대회에서 대의원들은 대한인국민회 중앙총회를 설립했고, 중앙총회는 스스로를 한국의 "무형정부"라 선언했다. 1917년 박용만을 포함한 14명이 상해에서 "대동단결선언"을 발표했는데 "대동단결선언"의 내용과 1911년 북미대한국민회 대의원들이 통과시킨 21개 의안 모두 “국민주권설” 등을 포함하고 있을 뿐 아니라, 매우 유사하다. 따라서 이 발표에서는 대한민국 민주공화제와 상해 임시정부의 민주공화제 선포 기원의 계보를 1911년 캘리포니아주 리버사이드에서 개최된 대한인국민회 북미총회에서 찾아야 한다고 제안한다.

제목: When K-Pop Meets Heritage: Netflix’s K-Pop Demon Hunters

개요: This presentation examines the global expansion of K-Culture and the practical transformation of the concept of “K-Heritage,” focusing on the animation K-Pop Demon Hunters (hereafter KDH), produced by Sony Pictures and released on Netflix in June 2025. KDH hybridizes K-pop, Korean shamanism, traditional costumes, and gugak (Korean traditional music) elements, reconstructing tradition with a contemporary sensibility and embodying “Korean-ness” as a form of living heritage within global popular culture. As such, KDH functions simultaneously as an evolved narrative of K-Culture and as a new intersection where traditional arts encounter digital-age popular culture, offering a case through which to consider the trajectory of the “next Korean Wave” and the global communicability of traditional arts.

제목: 일본의 역사부정론과 한국 근대사

개요: 이 발표는 일본에서 유포되고 있는 역사부정론의 하나인 시혜론(施惠論)을 대상으로, 특히 대학의 역사교육 과정에서 그 극복 가능성을 고찰하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 이를 위해 ‘역사 리터러시’ 개념을 가설적으로 활용하고자 하며, 독일사 연구의 성과를 참조하여 시혜론이 지니는 구조적 문제점을 검토한다. 또한 대학 수업에서 제출된 학생 페이퍼를 분석함으로써 역사부정론적 언설이 학습자의 역사 이해와 서술 방식에 미치는 영향을 살펴본다. 끝으로 독일사 연구에서 제시된 ‘사실–해석–의견’의 삼층 구조를 토대로 작성한 강의 시안을 수업에 적용하고 그 성과를 검토하며 앞으로의 과제를 제시한다.

제목: China through 18th-Century European Eyes: Description and Translation in Du Halde’s Description of the Empire of China and Chinese-Tartary, together with the Kingdoms of Korea and Tibet (1735)

개요: In cultural exchange and cross-translation between East and West, perspectives and choices are inevitably involved. This presentation investigates one particular aspect of how knowledge about China was introduced and translated in early modern Europe, with a focus on three stories from Jingu qiguan (今古奇觀) contained in Du Halde’s Description of the Empire of China (中華帝國全志, 1735), the most extensive compilation of knowledge and information about China produced by Jesuit missionaries. As editor of the Description of the Empire of China, Du Halde sought to defend the Jesuits’ adaptationism strategy during the Rites Controversy, in which it came under severe attack. He did so by refuting the claim that Chinese culture was inherently atheistic and instead emphasizing China as a country devoted to the worship of Heaven and to moral order. To substantiate this image, it was necessary to include Chinese texts that would support such a representation. The three stories from Jingu qiguan translated by Dentrecolles, therefore, can be understood as having been incorporated with precisely this intention.
