Zoom ID | 912 3272 5370 본 강연의 줌 링크가 필요하신 분께서는 아래 메일(crosscultural.aks@gmail.com)로 문의 바랍니다. 강연요지: 본 강연에서는 한국 영화에 대한 영미권 학계의 학문적 관심을 총 3시기로 나눠 살펴본다. 첫 번째 시기는 ‘한국(영화)의 새 물결’로표현되는 새로운 영화들의 등장으로 시작되었다. 서구의 비평가, 언론 그리고 학자들이 1970년대 후반의 홍콩 영화 및 1980년대 중반의 대만 영화를 각기 ‘홍콩의 새 물결’, ‘대만의 새로운 영화들’로불렀던 것과 비슷한 양상이었다. 반면 두 번째 시기는 한국영화에 대한 현지 연구자 1세대의 등장과 함께 시작되었고, 오늘날에 해당하는 세 번째 시기는 두 가지 주목할 만한 변화와 함께 시작되었다. 비영화전공자이면서 한국영화에 주목한 학자들의 등장, 그리고 한국태생 학생들의 영미권 영화 관련 교육기관 입학이 그것이었다.

Abstract: By locating South Korean cinema in the trajectories of Asian cinema reception in the US film market and academia, this lecture will discuss three phases of scholarly interest in Korean cinema in English-language academia that have shaped the history of the field. The first coincides with a new cinema known as “the Korean New Wave” that emerged similarly to what Western critics, journalists, and scholars have labelled the “Hong Kong New Wave” of the late 1970s and the “New Taiwan Cinema” of the mid-1980s. The second phase began with the emergence of the first generation of Korean cinema researchers. The third and current phase opened with two notable changes. The first is the rise of scholars of South Korean cinema outside the discipline of cinema studies. Second, a wave of South Korea–born graduate students has entered US/UK academic institutions.
