본 사업은 2019년 제1학기 한국학대학원 글로벌한국학부 고전번역학과에 개설된 일반전공과목 ‘인문고전번역세미나 II’와 연계된 연구과제 사업으로, 조선시대 유학 관련 자료를 영역하고, 주석 및 해제 작업과 peer review를 통해 수강생들의 고전 번역 능력을 향상시키며 아울러, 동아시아적 맥락에서 한국 유학을 주제별로 선별하여 영미권 대학 강의에서 사용할 수 있는 웹컨텐츠를 개발하는 것이다.

효과적이고 깊이 있는 학습을 위해 한국 유학사상을 주제별로 접근 매시간 각 주제에 대한 심도 있는 강의와 토론을 영어로 진행하였다(예: 한국유학과 우주론), 또한 유학 사상이 중국에서 시작되어 한국, 일본 등 동아시아의 철학으로 자리 잡은 바. 이를 고려하여 한국 유학을 중심 주제로 삼되, 배경 및 쟁점과 관련해서는 중국 혹은 일본의 사례를 참고함으로써 학생들이 한국 유학을 넘어 동아시아적 안목을 배양할 수 있도록 하였다.

구체적인 연구 방법으로 매 수업의 전반부에서는 한국의 유교를 주제별로 구분하여 영어로 진행하고, 후반부에서는 강의 내용에 대한 질문과 토론이 이루어졌으며, 이와 함께 유학 원전번역 및 해제 작업 그리고 비평을 진행하였다. 원전으로는 율곡 이이의 저작을 선정하였는데, 이이의 저작은 퇴계 이황의 저작에 비하여 거의 번역이 이루어지지 않았다. 율곡은 퇴계와 함께 한국유학의 대표적인 학자로서 『聖學輯要』, 『擊蒙要訣』, 『東湖問答』, 『醇言』, 〈인심도심설〉, 〈천도책〉등 중요한 저작을 많이 남겼으며 이 가운데 본 연구과제에서는 율곡의 핵심 저작이며 학문의 목표와 방법을 명확하게 제시한 『擊蒙要訣』을 선정해 번역하였다.

ㆍ 유학 주제별 강의안: 영미권 대학의 강의교재로 활용될 것을 고려하여 영어 자료 중심으로 주제를 분류하고 매주 각 주제별 강의안을 개발하였으며 이를 종합해 학기말 한국유학 개론서 형식의 결과물을 도출하였다. 이를 바탕으로 연구책임자는 예일대학 종교학과에서 2019년 가을학기에 “Neo-Confucianism in Korea”를 개설하여 강의할 예정이다.

ㆍ 유학 주제별 토론 자료: 강의안을 바탕으로 각 주제별 핵심쟁점을 토론하였으며(예: 우주론/인성론, 등), 토론과정에서 나온 의문점과 쟁점을 반영한 자료가 도출되었다.

ㆍ 한국 고전 영문 번역자 양성: 한문 원전을 정확히 이해하고 직역과 의역을 적절히 활용하는 번역 훈련을 통해 학생들이 고전 분야의 전문 번역가로 성장할 수 있는 기회를 제공하였다.

1. 연구 배경

전 세계적인 한류 열풍으로 한국과 한국어에 대한 관심이 높아지면서 지금까지 다양한 관련 교재가 영어로 편찬되고 연구 활동도 활발히 이루어지고 있으나, 이는 여전히 한국어 분야에 집중되어 있으며, 한국을 보다 깊이 공부하려는 외국인 학생들을 위한 한국학 영문교재는 매우 부족한 실정이다. 특히, 현재 영문으로 출판된 한국유학 관련 개론서들은 중요한 내용들을 다루고 있긴 하지만 한국 유학을 모르는 외국인 학생들을 위한 강의에 바로 활용하기에는 전반적으로 난해한 내용들을 포함하고 있다. 따라서 이를 좀 더 쉽게 풀이한 개요 및 해설이 포함된 교재가 절실하다. 이러한 문제의식을 가지고 한국사상사의 근간을 이루고 있는 유학과 유교에 대한 온라인 자료 개발을 기획하게 되었다.

2. 구체적인 연구 성과

∙ 유학 주제별 강의안: 영미권 대학의 강의교재로 활용될 것을 고려하여 영어 자료 중심으로 주제를 분류하고 매주 각 주제별 강의안을 개발하였으며 이를 종합해 학기말 한국유학 개론서 형식의 결과물을 도출하였다. 개론서의 성격에 맞게 보편적이면서도 핵심적인 주제를 선별하여 풍부한 도상자료와 관련 참고문헌을 첨부하였다. 이를 바탕으로 연구책임자는 예일대학 종교학과에서 2019년 가을학기에 “Neo-Confucianism in Korea”를 개설하여 강의할 예정이다.

∙ 원전자료의 역주 및 해제: ????격몽요결????을 역주하였고 해제를 첨부하였으며 peer review를 통해 유학원전과 관련된 번역 전략, 용어 선택 등 번역 전반에 관한 문제점들을 논의하였다.

3. 연구 성과의 기대효과 및 활용방안

(1) 수업 교재로서의 웹컨텐츠

∙ 본 연구결과물은 영미권 대학 수업의 교재 개발을 목표로 진행하였지만 해외 학생들뿐만 아니라 본원 한국학대학원의 외국인 학생들에게도 유용한 수업자료로 활용될 수 있다.

(2) 연구 자료로서의 영문 번역

∙ 한국학 전공자는 유학 원전 번역물을 통해 번역뿐만 아니라 원문, 주석, 해제 등 종합적인 자료를 활용하여 보다 심도 있고 입체적으로 연구를 진행할 수 있다.

(3) 인력양성 방안: 한문을 영어로 번역하는 학술 번역 전문가 양성

∙ 본 과제에 참여한 학생들은 한문 원전을 정확히 이해하고 직역과 의역을 적절히 활용하는 번역 훈련을 통해 고전 분야의 전문 번역가로 성장할 것이다. 한문 전문번역가의 양성이 단기간에 이루어질 수는 없겠지만 체계적이고 집중적인 훈련을 통해 효과적인 번역 교육의 기회를 제공하였다.
