○ 연구목적
   한국음악입문서의 영문 집필로 한국음악의 해외 학계 보급과 이의 세계화에 기여할 것을 목적으로 함.

○ 연구배경
   1. 음악은 표현문화로서 가장 강한 기능을 지녔다. 따라서 한 나라의 전통 음악은 그 나라의 주체적 문화지표의 이해에 매우 중요한 기능을 가졌다.
   2. 해외에서 한국학연구는 1990년 이후 주요 대학들에 대한 한국국제교류재단의 적극적인 지원에 힘입어 비로소 활기를 띄우기 시작했다. 그러나, 지금까지 대부분의 지원은 언어와 역사 분야에 비중을 두었다.
   3. 중국과 일본문화에 대한 많은 서양학자들의 편견으로 인한 한국음악에 대한 부족한 이해 태도에서 벗어나 세계 속의 한국음악문화의 특수성에 대한 올바른 인식이 절실히 필요하다고 본다.
   4. 따라서, 한국음악에 관한 입문서를 영문으로 집필로 한국음악의 해외 학계 보급과 이의 세계화에 기여할 것을 목적으로 함.

○ 연구방법
   책임연구자가 매달 한 항목 집필 완성을 목표로 하고, 집필에 필요한 음악의 채보와 자료조사 및 검증은 연구보조자가 담당함. 한 항목의 집필이 완료되면 영문 윤문과 감수를 의뢰할 것임.

○ 연구내용
   '97년도 집필 목표 항목은 다음과 같음. 아래의 chapter title은 후에 변경될 수 있음.
   *Introduction: Musical landscape of the old and new Korea.
   *Korean music within the East Asian and world context.
   *Major historical accounts of Korean music.
   *Three institutions of the professional musicians.
   *Musical instruments and their acoustical properties.
   *Notations.
   *Shaping of p’ansori, the one-person opera.
   *Sinawi and instrumental ensembles in the shaman ritual context
   *Form and styles of sanjo
   *Mahayana Buddhism and its ritual performing arts.
   *Historical development of the Court Ritual Music.
   *Post-1948 musical culture of the DPRK
   *Diaspora: Musical Identity of Koreans Abroad.

   한국음악의 역사적인 특수성, 미학적인 문제, 현대사회 속에서 전통음악의 의미, 장식음, 음색, 산조와 시나위의 양식과 불교음악에 대한 개론적 내용을 다루었음.
