Published as the third collection of papers presented at the 2010 Societas Koreana lecture, this book, Korean Politics and Foreign Affairs, aims to help readers understand the relationship between Korean politics and diplomacy that played a key role in Korea’s remarkable economic and social development. As history shows, Korea has been successful in rooting out poverty, illiteracy and political and social instability that once defined the country, and playing an active role in the world’s political arena while relishing rapid economic development and democracy. The country is now one of the world’s top exporters and has hosted some of the world’s most important summit meetings such as G-20, ASEM and APEC. This book is a fine introduction to the efforts Korea made in politics and diplomacy to get over disadvantages such as national division and lack of resources and make such remarkable growth in such a short period of time. 이 책은 2010년 소키에타스 코리아나 강연에서 발표된 글을 모은 세 번째 모음집으로, 제목 "Korean Politics and Foreign Affairs"에서 알 수 있듯 한국의 눈부신 발전과 이를 이끌어낸 한국정치와 외교와의 관계를 이해하기 위해 기획되었습니다. 한국사회의 주요 특징으로 언급되던 빈곤, 문맹, 사회 정치적 대격변 등은 이미 사라진지 오래고, 오늘의 한국은 세계 정치의 중추적 역할을 담당하며 경제적 발전과 민주주의의 급성장을 누리고 있습니다. 세계 상위의 수출대국이며, G-20, ASEM, APEC 등 국제 정상회의에서 주도적 위치에 있습니다. 분단과 자원부족 국가로 연결되어 있던 한국이 짧은 시간 안에 이러한 일들을 되돌렸다는 것은 매우 중요한 사실입니다. 그러므로 정치와 외교 분야에서 어느 만큼의 노력을 기울여 이러한 결과를 만들어 냈는지 살펴본다면 지난 몇 년간 한국의 성장을 이해하는 데 많은 도움이 될 것입니다.
