The 186th Colloquium on Korean Studies Abroad
The Division of the International Support for Korean Studies at the Center for International Affairs of the Academy of Korean Studies held the 186th Colloquium on Korean Studies Abroad on August 9, 2024, at the Munhyeonggwan Grand Conference Room. The colloquium was held to present the findings of the research in Korea of the 2024 AKS fellowship recipients – researcher Cheng-i Lu (Institute of Chinese Literature and Philosophy, Academia Sinica) and Prof. Sohl Catherine Lee (Stony Brook University, State University of New York).
Researcher Cheng-i Lu gave a presentation on “Analyzing the ‘Theory of Li-qi of Korean Confucian Scholar Ki Jeong-jin (韓儒奇正鎮的「理氣論」 析論)”. The ‘Horak Debate,’ recorded in the late 18th century in the Ilseongrok, is a philosophical debate about human nature and emotions. Lim Seong-joo believed that 'Li' and 'Qi' were independent and separate from each other, while Ki-Jeong-jin argued that they were closely connected. The presentation explored an important philosophical debate in the Joseon Dynasty and what Ki-Jeong-jin's theory of li-qi was about.
Prof. Sohl Catherine Lee gave a presentation on “Vernacular Modernism and Buddhist Art.” The presentation examined three examples of Buddhist modernism: the Buddhist painting “Gamrodo,” the Buddhist rituals “Yeongsanjae” and “Cheondojae,” and the Buddhist monks’ “Ttangselbeop” sermon. Vernacular Modernism refers to modernism that combines local traditions with modern elements. The presentation was impressive in that it had a new perspective of viewing Buddhist culture, which has a long tradition, as a part of contemporary art from a modern epistemological standpoint.
The colloquiums drew many researchers and graduate students, who shared their opinions. The Division of International Support for Korean Studies will continue to organize events to promote communication among local and foreign researchers.
