Korea's Various Cultural Heritage Experiences

MarĂa Castellanos

It is difficult to describe experiences in words, as they involve feelings, sensations and emotions, but this essay aims to give a small insight into all those experiences during this journey full of learning. The destination is the Republic of Korea, a country which celebrates its history and culture. The following are some of the main activities included in this visit.

During the first days of the seminar, lectures were given to provide a broader perspective on both the functions of the Academy of Korean Studies (AKS) and amazing elements of the education system and the Republic of Korea.

All these experiences provided elements to analyze and understand aspects of the Korean history and culture. The conference on Korean History in Cultural Heritage was of particular interest to the Social Studies team. This experience provided an insight into the recording tradition which has been present over many centuries on the Korean Peninsula, enabling the study of the legacy of the different historical periods which have taken place on this peninsula and still are a vital part of the current Korean society.

In regard to the visit to Dongtan Joongang High School, it was an enriching experience from sharing close interaction with the different officials of the institution, the teachers and, of course, the students.

On the other hand, the visit to cultural and historical sites was especially appreciated by the social studies team for a chance to compare what they had learned in theory in the first days and experience the architecture, arts, cuisine, clothing and elements of culture characteristic of the different historical periods.

All the sites we visited were fascinating, including the Bulguksa Temple, the Seokguram Grotto and the Gyeongbokgung Palace as special places of interest. The mere act of walking where so many people have walked at different times throughout history allows us to reflect on the human condition and the historical legacy shaping and nurturing the identity of nations. Likewise, the way in which the Korean society has cared for its heritage, many of which are considered Korean treasures and some of which are already part of the World Heritage List, generates respect and admiration.

It is important to highlight that we felt supported and accompanied at all times by the friendliness of researcher Park Hye-jeong and interpreter Lee Eun-jeong, to whom we feel indebted for their keen attention in making this experience unforgettable.

Our heartfelt thanks to all the people we met and to those we could not meet, who made this wonderful learning experience possible. South Korea is a country which has welcomed us warmly and gifted us cherished memories in our minds and hearts for a lifetime. Thank you very much for all you have done for us.
