2024 Textbook Seminar for Educators of El Salvador
Korea's educational and cultural experiences
The delegation of El Salvador's Ministry of Education, Science and Technology participated in the “Textbook Seminar for Educators of El Salvador” which prepared various activities from April 14 to April 20, 2024. During my visit to Korea, I had the following valuable experiences.
The seminar consisted of lectures by experts in areas such as the Korean education system, assessment, and curriculum with a lecture on "Assessing Academic Achievement in Korea" and Korean history with a lecture on "Korean History in Cultural Heritage." Each lecture provided the relevant data and information to understand the current situation in Korea as well as to appreciate the historical legacy of South Korea, including pioneering developments in Korea. These lectures were especially interesting for the Social Studies team as they served as an opportunity to approach the historical sources directly and provide elements for understanding the changes and similarities that have taken place in Korea's culture and society. Furthermore, they made us appreciate the historical wealth represented in every element of Korean culture and heritage.
Moreover, as part of the educational system approach and future developments in this field, we were able to visit Dongtan Joongang High School where we exchanged ideas with educational authorities, teachers, and students, which allowed us to learn first-hand about the projects and methodologies promoted in order to educate young people. Likewise, we visited the facilities of the educational institution where we witnessed a motivating, learning-friendly environment.
In terms of visits to historical sites (Hwaseong Fortress, historical areas of Gyeongju, Gyeongbokgung Palace, tour of a traditional Korean village) and museum tours (Seoul History Museum, Korean History Museum), efforts to recognize and value Korea's history as well as the historical legacy shared with the rest of the world should be highlighted. Furthermore, it underscored the importance of preserving and disseminating the people's heritage as an element of identity building. The experience of personally being in these places—some of which are Korean treasures with others recognized as UNESCO World Heritage Sites—is both precious and unforgettable. Therefore, the learning gained from experiencing the cultural heritage of periods such as the Silla Kingdom is deeply appreciated and treasured. Some extra activities such as visiting the exhibition Van Gogh: The Immersive Experience and the DIY experience were enriching as they helped the participants share and learn in a practical way.
Finally, we wish to express our sincere thanks to the Academy of Korean Studies (AKS) for the human and professional standards that allowed the delegation from El Salvador to have an invaluable learning experience. Likewise, we confirm our commitment to the continued strengthening of cooperation ties and incorporation of elements of Korean history and culture into the Social Studies textbooks in school.
