The 182nd Colloquium on Korean Studies Abroad
The Division of International Support for Korean Studies at the Center for International Affairs of the Academy of Korean Studies held the 182nd Colloquium on Korean Studies Abroad on Friday, May 10, 2024, at the Munhyeonggwan Grand Conference Room. The colloquium was held to present the research findings in Korea of Prof. Park Mi-young of the University of Auckland, a 2024 AKS fellowship recipient.
The topic of Professor Park’s presentation was “Linguistic Marginalization and Insecurity: Experience of North Korean Refugees in South Korean Higher Education." She dealt with how North Korean refugees adapt to the new linguistic environment in South Korea, and how they experience discrimination and marginalization due to their habitual usage of North Korean language and accent. This categorization and discrimination contributes to low academic participation among North Korean refugees and negatively affects their identity as North Koreans. In particular, Prof. Park vividly showed interviews with North Korean defectors, which helped participants deeply empathize with the difficulties they face.
The colloquiums drew many researchers and graduate students, who shared their opinions. The Division of International Support for Korean Studies will continue to organize events to promote communication among local and foreign researchers.

Educators of Ukrainian Visit AKS
Igor Khvorostianyi, Director of the Department of General Secondary and Preschool Education at the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine, and Professor Igor Shchupark, author of Ukrainian history textbooks and Director of the Ukrainian Institute for Holocaust Studies, visited South Korea May 27-31, 2024, to attend the Korean culture seminar. The seminar was part of collaboration between the Division of Understanding Korea Project of the Academy of Korean Studies and the Embassy of the Republic of Korea in Ukraine to improve the Korea-related content of Ukrainian textbooks. The delegation, headed by Chung Chang-yoon, Director of the Korea Education Center in Ukraine, visited the AKS, where they were introduced to the Understanding Korea Project and discussed various ways to make educational collaborations.
The delegation first watched an AKS promotional video and was introduced to the Understanding Korea Project and online sites that provide materials for understanding Korea and information on Korea. The group then visited the International Textbook Library to see the Korea-related contents on foreign textbooks.

The Ukrainian delegation offered to discuss various bilateral textbook projects that are being undertaken in collaboration with the Division of Understanding Korea Project and the Embassy of the Republic of Korea in Ukraine. The Ukraine officials also confirmed that Korea is currently included in the curriculum of Ukraine's 9th, 10th, and 11th-grade history and geography textbooks, and that the writing for them has already been completed.
They also mentioned that despite the ongoing war, textbook authors have been holding roundtable discussions on how to improve the content related to Korea in Ukrainian textbooks, and such discussions are being reflected in the textbooks. The Ukrainian officials also suggested that the authors of history and geography of the two countries organize a body for regular consultation to lay the groundwork for providing textbooks with correct information to students.
