2023 AKS Program for Educators in Latin America and the Caribbean
The Division of the Understanding Korea Project of the Center for International Affairs at the Academy of Korean Studies held a six-day Educational Cooperation Program for Latin America from October 16 to 21, 2023. Education and textbook experts from eight Latin American countries attended the program (Guatemala, Mexico, Argentina, Ecuador, Honduras, Costa Rica, Colombia, and Paraguay).

At the international conference, attendees discussed how Korea and its developmental directions are represented in the school curriculums of Guatemala, Mexico, Argentina, Honduras, Costa Rica, and Colombia. Additionally, they reviewed Korean-related content included in the textbooks across all eight participating Latin American countries. The conference also highlighted how "Jikji" was included in Ecuadorian textbooks and showcased Korean cultural activities and language classes in Paraguayan public schools. This event facilitated the exchange of information among the Latin American countries, serving as an opportunity to discuss the inclusion of more Korea-related content in local educational materials and textbooks. Subsequently, lectures on "Korean History through Cultural Heritage" and "The Joy of Discovering Korean Food" offered participants an opportunity to deepen their understanding of Korean history and culinary culture.

For hands-on experiences, participants visited Suwon, Seoul, and Paju to engage directly with Korean culture. They explored Hwaseong Haenggung Palace in Suwon, a UNESCO-listed World Heritage Site, and visited Gyeongbokgung Palace, Hanok Village, Insadong, and the National Museum of Korea in Seoul, a city where tradition and modernity coexist. They then visited Paju, a symbol of peace, connection, and coexistence, where they had the opportunity to see firsthand the history and current situation of the Korean Peninsula at Imjingak, Panmunjom, the Third Tunnel of Aggression, and Dora Observatory. Participants also experienced the world-renowned 'The Painters' art performance, enjoying the precision and entertainment of Korean performing arts.

Participating Latin American education and textbook experts have gained a heightened interest in Korean education, history, and culture. The Academy of Korean Studies will continue to strengthen its network with them and deepen the understanding of their countries' local students about Korea through textbooks and educational materials.
