Call for Applications:
2024 AKS Fellowship for Korean Studies

The Academy of Korean Studies runs the 'AKS Fellowship for Korean Studies' program, aiming to offer international scholars the opportunity to conduct their research(or dissertation research) in Korea. Following the guidelines provided below, the AKS is currently accepting applications for its 2024 AKS Fellowship for Korean Studies program.

1. Eligibility : Foreign scholars of foreign university in the humanities and social sciences
2. Fellowship Period
   The fellowship should take place between January 1 st and December 31 st , 2024.
   Applicants can apply for minimum two months to maximum six months support.
3. Fellowship Grant
  (1) Airfare: Economy-class round trip airfare(Only offered to overseas awardees)
  (2) Monthly stipend: KRW 2,000,000
  (3) Access to the facilities of AKS including the library
  (4) Up to 50% discount of AKS Guesthouse charges
4. Required Documents: Application form, Curriculum Vitae, Certificate of Employment (Registration),
   Extra documents for Ph. D. candidate
5. Application Period: June 12, 2023 (Mon.) 10:00AM ~ July 28, 2023 (Fri.) 5:00PM (Korea Standard Time)
6. Submission Method: Online submission at the Academy of Korean Studies' Website
7. Result Notification: The result of your application will be notified individually in September, 2023.

Call for Essays : The Understanding Korea Contest 2023

Essay Contest
We are pleased to announce the Call for Essays for the Understanding Korea Contest 2023. Please review the guidelines outlined below and ensure to adhere them when submitting your essay. Hosted by the Center for International Affair at AKS, the Understanding Korea Project aims to rectify misconceptions and enhance the quality of content about Korea in international textbooks.
Essay Topics   ● International Images of Korea
    - Images of Korea as presented in international instruction materials (international textbooks, internet sites, etc.)
    - Proposals on how to improve the image of Korea
  ● Notable Applications of using Understanding Korea Materials
    - Notable Applications of using Understanding Korea materials and proposals for new materials
Eligibility   Foreigners, Koreans living abroad
Submission   Submit via the official website of the Academy of Korean Studies
  - Language: Korean or English
  - Essay Length: Approximately 3 pages in A4 format

2023 Textbook Seminar for Educators of Cambodia

2023 Textbook Seminar for Educators of Cambodia
The Division of Understanding Korea Project of the Academy of Korean Studies held the "Textbook Seminar for Educators of Cambodian" from May 27 to June 3, 2023. The four participating officials from the Cambodian Ministry of Education, Youth and Sport are responsible for revising the textbooks for grades 10 and 11 -- Prum Vibol, Leng Sarie, Eng Vat, and Kim Pheng.

The program consisted of four main parts.
1. Textbook Seminar
The seminar helped the visiting delegation of the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sport of Cambodia understand the education and textbook systems of both South Korea and Cambodia, and they made specific discussions on the Korea-related contents of Cambodian textbooks that are currently being revised. They also agreed on the need to expand contents on Korean culture, which are relatively fewer that those on Korea's economic development.

2. Lectures on Korea
The Cambodian delegation were given lectures to understand Korean history and culture, and Korean economic development models and factors. Prof. Kim In-ho of Kwangwoon University and Prof. Lee Chung-yeol of Korea University gave lectures on the history of Seoul and the royal palaces, and Korea's economic development and its factors, respectively.

3. School Visit
The delegation visited Seohyeon Middle School in Bundang, south of Seoul, which helped them understand school-level Korean education. The visitors had a meeting with Principal Park Jang-hyun and teachers, in which they had time to understand the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on Korea's secondary education and classes, the use of digital textbooks in secondary education, and Korean textbooks and supplementary teaching materials made by schools.

4.Cultural Tour
As part of the efforts to expand the Korea-related contents in Cambodian textbooks that focus on the Korean economic development to culture, visits were arranged to Suwon Hwaseong Fortress, Gyeongju Historic Area, Gyeongju National Museum, Bukchon Hanok Village, Insadong, and Seoul Museum of History. The Cambodian delegation had time to gain a better understanding of the history and culture of Korea, including those which are listed as World Heritage Sites, and experience the coexistence of cities and cultural heritage.

The seminar helped South Korea and Cambodia solidify the foundation for textbook cooperation between the two countries and the participants were able to discuss concrete measures to expand Korea-related contents in Cambodian textbooks. The Academy of Korean Studies and the Cambodian Ministry of Education, Youth and Sport will continue to maintain a strong relationship of exchange and cooperation.

The 173rd·174th Colloquium on Korean Studies Abroad

The 173rd Colloquium on Korean Studies Abroad
The 173th and 174th Colloquium of Korean Studies Abroad took place at the Grand Conference Room at the Grand Conference Room at the Academy of Korean Studies (AKS) on June 7(Weds) and June 9(Fri), 2023.. The 173rd Colloquium featured lectures by two 2023 AKS fellowship recipients on their research results -- Professor Musa Khan of Riphah International University in Pakistan and Amos Farooqi, a Ph.D. candidate at the University of Copenhagen in Denmark. The 174th Colloquium featured a lecture by Dr. Milagros Flores-Román (former president of ICOFORT), who visited Korea under the "Overseas Scholars Invitation Program" run by the Gyeonggi Cultural Heritage Institute.

Prof. Musa Khan, speaking on "Public Diplomacy through Screen: Influence of Korean Dramas in South Asian Region," talked about how Korean dramas are perceived and what influences they are having in the South Asian region like India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh. Amos Farooqi, speaking on "Displacement and Manifestations of Localism within Korean Hip-hop," talked about how the Korean hip-hop genre is related to the region and how localism is expressed in Korean hip-hop music.
The 174th Colloquium on Korean Studies Abroad
Dr. Milagros Flores-Román spoke about the history and global heritage value of the World Heritage-listed San Juan Castle. The doctor also discussed the military importance of the San Juan Castle in Puerto Rico, the history and development of castle, and the reasons for its designation as the UNESCO World Heritage and its value.

The colloquiums drew many researchers and graduate students, who shared their opinions. The Division of International Support for Korean Studies will continue to organize events to promote communication among local and foreign researchers.

AKS Fellowship Launched for June 2023

The Division of International Support for Korean Studies at the Center for International Affairs of the Academy of Korean Studies has been offering "Academy of Korean Studies Fellowship" every year. Aimed to expand the base of overseas Korean studies, the fellowship invites foreign researchers who want to do research in Korean studies. A total of 13 fellows have been selected for 2023. Those who started their fellowship research in June are as follows.

▣ Sirin Sung
  - Affiliation: Queen's University Belfast
  - Research Period: June 15, 2023 - August 31, 2023 (3 months)
  - Research Proposal: Changing Fatherhood?: Gender Norms, Culture and Policies in South Korea
  - Research Content: By investigating the impact of changes in fathers' perceptions, we study how cultural and policy changes
    in Korean society have affected child care and childcare. In addition, the process of sharing childcare work and parenting
    decisions in dual-income families is analyzed through in-depth interviews from a gender perspective, and the effectiveness
    of the parental leave system and work-family balance policy is investigated from a critical perspective.
  - Presentation of research results: August (scheduled)

▣ Alvaro Trigo Maldonado
  - Affiliation: University of Salamanca
  - Research Period: June 18, 2023 - September 15, 2023 (3 months)
  - Research Proposal: Modern Korean Literature Focusing on Chae Mansik´s the "Chameleon" Archetype of Character
    Represented in His Satirical Works
  - Research Content: This study would like to investigate the satirical themes of Chae Mansik's novels and how he used humor
    in his literary world. In addition, this study aims to explore the novelist's works from a broader perspective by collecting and
    analyzing some of his lesser-known works and materials through fieldwork.
  - Presentation of research results: September (scheduled)

▣ Young-Im Lee
  - Affiliation: California State University, Sacramento
  - Research Period: June 28, 2023 - November 28, 2023 (5 months)
  - Research Proposal: The End of the Era, or the Past Long-Lasting? Impeachment of Park Geun-hye and the Park Chung-hee
    Nostalgia
  - Research Content: The extent of President Park Chung-hee's impact on the country's economic development and
    democratization remains a highly debated subject in South Korean society more than 40 years after his death. Previous studies
    have focused on analyzing the origins of the Park Chung-hee nostalgia and its role in South Korean electoral politics. This study
    aims to examine how the impeachment of Park Geun-hye affected the Park Chung-hee nostalgia.
  - Presentation of research results: November (scheduled)
