The 95th Societas Koreana Meeting

The 95th Societas Koreana Meeting
The Division of International Support for Korean Studies at the Center for International Affairs of the Academy of Korean Studies held the 95th Societas Koreana Lecture at the Korea Press Center on Tuesday, May 9, 2023. The lecture was given on "South Korea's Ratification of the UN Convention for the Protection of All Persons from Enforced Disappearance (CED) by Professor Baek Tae-ung of the University of Hawaii at Manoa. He spoke about the implications of South Korea's accession to the UN convention.

Professor Baek said that based on the fact that South Korea ratified the Convention on the Protection of All Persons from Enforced Disappearance, one of the core human rights treaties of the United Nations, on December 8, 2022, South Korea is involved directly or indirectly in a number of cases of enforced disappearances pending at UN bodies. He also commented that South Korea's ratification of the Convention for the Protection of All Persons from Enforced Disappearance is meaningful in that it institutes international standards for dealing with enforced disappearances into domestic norms in anticipation of future development relations between South and North Korea and allows South Korea to work with the international community.

Participants in the lecture, including foreign diplomats and researchers, had an opportunity to examine various efforts of the United Nations to prevent enforced disappearances and review the implications of South Korea's ratification of the UN Convention. Participants were able to share various opinions in a Q&A session that followed the lecture. The lecture will be posted on the Societas Koreana's YouTube channel.

The program also invited Professor Emeritus Lee Hee-soo of Hanyang University; Kim Eun-young, Head of the Office of International Cooperation at the Korean Educational Development Institute; and Cho Eun-kyung, Senior Teacher at Geunyeong Middle School in Jeonju, to give special lectures on South Korea-Arab relations, South Korea's education and economic development, and Korea's cultural heritage education, respectively. The lectures gave the participants time to understand the history of bilateral exchanges between Korea and Jordan, Korea's development experience, and efforts to preserve its culture and traditions.

The Jordanian delegation was much interested in foreign language education in Korea as well and visited Seongnam Foreign Language High School to learn about the specialized foreign language education system and foreign language teaching methods. The delegation also had time to understand the traditional culture, way of life, history and culture of the Korean people by having cultural experiences at the Korean Folk Village, and visiting the Story of King Sejong Exhibition Hall in Gwanghwamun, and royal palaces.

They also visited the SK Telecom Future Technology Experience Center, where they were shown technologies related to autonomous driving, augmented reality, and holographic communication and witnessed South Korea's advanced information and communication technologies that are leading innovation in the global information and communication industry. The Jordanian delegates participated in the DMZ Peace Program to understand the history and reality of the division of Korea and the South Koreans' sentiment of seeking peace. All those programs were dealt with as potential Korean-related topics that could be included in Jordanian textbooks.

The program laid the foundation for solid textbook cooperation between South Korea and Jordan and gave an opportunity to the participants to discuss specific measures to expand Korean-related content in Jordanian textbooks. The AKS will continue to maintain vibrant exchanges and cooperation with the Jordanian Ministry of Education.

AKS Fellowship Launched for May 2023

The Division of International Support for Korean Studies at the Center for International Affairs of the Academy of Korean Studies has been offering "Academy of Korean Studies Fellowship" every year. Aimed to expand the base of overseas Korean studies, the fellowship invites foreign researchers who want to do research in Korean studies. A total of 13 fellows have been selected for 2023. Those who started their fellowship research in May are as follows.

▣ Hye-Sung Kim
  - Affiliation: Appalachian State University
  - Research Period: May 16, 2023 - July 15, 2023 (2 months)
  - Research Proposal: Temporary Nuclear Proliferation for Complete Denuclearization in the Korean Peninsula: Survey
and Experimental Evidence among Members of the National Assembly
  - Research Content: Recent public opinion polls show that a majority of South Koreans favor the country's own nuclear
armament despite the U.S. extended deterrence that includes nuclear weapons. Such a consistent, strong public preference
for nuclear armament could result in policymaking or decisions to achieve nuclear armament or mislead allies like the United
States to believe that the South Korean government favors nuclear armament. This study will include a survey and experimental
study of about 600 lawmakers and foreign affairs experts in order to analyze how the strong public support for nuclear
armament and other determinants affect policymakers and decision-makers on their choice of nuclear armament policies,
including temporary nuclear armament aimed at the complete denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula.
  - Presentation of research results: July (scheduled)

▣ Hye Eun Choi
  - Affiliation: Shanghai New York University
  - Research Period: May 16, 2023 - August 16, 2023 (3 months)
  - Research Proposal: Inventing Modern Sound Culture in Colonial Korea (1910–1945)
  - Research Content: This researcher is studying how the sound reproduction technology and the desires and activities of people
in the industry led to the modern transformation of sound culture in Joseon, which was under the cross of colonization and
transition to capitalism in the first half of the 20th century. During my fellowship, I will complete a paper on how the popular
song "Tears of Mokpo" was invoked and utilized in the first half of the 20th century while working on a book, tentatively
titled "Inventing Modern Sound Culture in Colonial Korea."
  - Presentation of research results: August (scheduled)
