Call for Applicants: 2023 AKS Understanding Korea Grant for the Development of education sources and Activities

The Academy of Korean Studies, Understanding Korea Project Office invites overseas experts in elementary, middle, and high school education or textbooks to participate in the "2023 AKS Understanding Korea Grant for the Development of education sources and Activities"

1. Support recipients: overseas experts in elementary, middle, or high school education and textbooks authors
2. Support category: Development of Educational Materials for Understanding Korea, Understanding Korea Activities
3. Support amount: up to KRW 50 million per project (the amount of assistance may vary according to the nature of
     each project)
4. Grant period: June 1, 2023 - May 31, 2024 (1 year)
5. Grant application period: April 1 - April 30, 2023 (Korea Standard Time)
6. Grant award announcement: [scheduled] May 31 (Wed), 2023, via AKS website and by email

AKS Fellowship Launched for Q1 2023

The Division of International Support for Korean Studies at the Center for International Affairs of the Academy of Korean Studies has been offering "Academy of Korean Studies Fellowship" every year. Aimed to expand the base of overseas Korean studies, the fellowship invites foreign researchers who want to do research in Korean studies. A total of 13 fellows have been selected for 2023. Those who started their fellowship research in January through March are as follows.

▣ Chi-Yun Shin
  - Affiliation: Sheffield Hallam University
  - Research Period: March 6, 2023 - May 5, 2023 (2 months)
  - Research Proposal: South Korean Women's Cinema: Trajectories and Projections
  - Research Content: The global status and popularity of Korean films are higher than ever, but the role of Korean female
     filmmakers and their work have been overlooked largely, and little is known about them abroad. This study aims to highlight
     the contributions of Korean female filmmakers to Korean film history and provide a forum for discourse on the reflection
     and discussion of the relationship between contemporary feminist issues and films. It will ascertain where Korean female
     films are and reread the Korean film history from a feminist perspective.

▣ Stella Kim
  - Affiliation: Columbia University
  - Research Period: March 1, 2023 - July 31, 2023 (5 months)
  - Research Proposal: Bodies of Virtue: Reproduction and Motherhood in Chosŏn Korea
  - Research Content: This project examines cultural and medical constructions of female reproduction with particular attention
     to discourses on the body and bodily experience and related these representations to social, ideological, and political systems
     of gender relations in premodern Korea. It utilizes a wide range of sources from medical treatises and prescription books to
     clinical case records.
  - Presentation of research results: July (scheduled)

▣ Musa Khan
  - Affiliation: Riphah International University
  - Research Period: February 1, 2023 - June 30, 2023 (5 months)
  - Research Proposal: Digital Diplomacy and Nation Branding Through Digital Distribution of Pop-Cultural Products: Penetration
     of Korean Television Dramas in the South Asian Region
  - Research Content: This study aims to find out how popular cultural contents can be spread by way of platforms. Specifically,
     the study looks into the social, cultural, and political roles in the distribution of popular cultural contents by examining export
     of Korean TV dramas to South Asian countries.
  - Presentation of research results: June (scheduled)

▣ Amos Farooqi
  - Affiliation: Sheffield Hallam University
  - Research Period: January 21, 2023 - June 21, 2023 (5 months)
  - Research Proposal: Hip-hop in the Supermodern: Displacement and Docility in Korean Hip-hop
  - Research Content: Korean hip-hop reflects established norms and institutions, but it is weak in terms of regionalism and
     socio-political consciousness. This study analyzes the cause and identifies the trends and developments of Korean hip-hop
     through interviews with hip-hop figures. It also examines Korean hip-hop's regionalism and relationship with localities.
