Publication of Excellent Academic Materials (foreign-published books) of Korean Studies Grant

Scholarly Publication
The Division of International Support for Korean Studies at the Center for International Affairs of the Academy of Korean Studies is undertaking overseas Korean studies support projects for Korean studies scholars at foreign universities and research institutes in order to revitalize and advance the level of overseas Korean studies. It selects support projects in the five areas through public competition -- academic research, academic conference, educational and cultural event, and publication of journals and books – in the second half of each year. The projects result in the publication of outstanding academic results every year. The year 2022 also saw the publication of the results of overseas Korean studies support projects by leading foreign publishing houses, which are drawing attention from the academic circle.

Professor Jeon Mihyon of York University in Canada, who was a beneficiary of the 2022 Overseas Korean Studies Support Project, published "New Generation Korean 3" (University of Toronto Press). The NEW GENERATION KOREAN series, which is designed for students of the Korean language in the secondary and post-secondary levels and self-taught adult learners, presents study goals and cases of exemplary classes developed by professors who had abundant teaching experience at Canadian and Korean universities. The NEW GENERATION KOREAN series, which had been tested in the classroom, may well help students learn Korean effectively and efficiently and understand Korean culture.

Professor Ratan Kumar Roy of Brac University in Bangladesh, a beneficiary of the 2021 Overseas Korean Studies Support Project, published "Korean Wave in South Asia: Transcultural Flow, Fandom and Identity" (Palgrave Macmillan). A collection of essays based on an empirical research of the Korean Wave in South Asia, it discovers and analyzes the dynamics of cross-border fandom, the mechanism of the media industry, and the expansion of the Korean Wave with a cross-cultural communication approach. This book looks into the cultural practices of fandom and subculture and the emotional practices of the youth, and will be able to contribute to research of media culture, South Asia, world culture and politics, art and humanities, and social sciences by providing a meticulous understanding of the flows of cultures in the globalized media environment and the internet era and their interactions.

Professor Lee Hyeon-seon of the SOAS University of London in the U.K., a beneficiary of the 2017 Overseas Korean Studies Support Project, published "Korean Film and Festivals: Global Transcultural Flows" (Routledge). The book, based on Korean films presented at Korean and international film festivals, looks into the multimedia film genre and the changes in the culture of the fast-growing film festival. It also takes a look at various disciplines such as film and media studies, literature and cultural studies, Korean studies, and Japanese studies from various perspectives. Noteworthy in the book are contributions from international and Korean film experts, and interviews with film professionals in the field. They will be of great interest not only to ordinary people interested in film festivals but also to students and scholars of Korean and Asian film and media studies.

These published outstanding academic results have been distributed to libraries at major domestic universities and Korean studies centers at foreign universities since 2021. They contribute to promoting the standard of the Overseas Korean Studies Support Projects.
